Over the past decade there has been considerable research directed towards understanding the relationship between the human body and the vast number of microbes that cohabitate it - the human microbiome. Specific bacterial populations are associated with specific regions and tissues of the human body such as skin, gastrointestinal and respiratory tract, reproductive system and oral mucosa, and form a semi-continuous layer in direct contact with human cells and tissues. As such, these populations occupy prime real estate niches for therapeutic intervention. At SynPhaGen, we recognized the therapeutic potential of the commensal microorganisms that reside in the human body and in the environment, and developed a first-in-class proprietary platform technology that allows us to specifically target bacteria at the location of greatest significance. Our technology is comprised of a tunable delivery system that encodes for therapeutic nucleic acids. The delivery vehicle carries information encoding the therapeutic genes of interest that, once delivered, will be expressed at the specific location that the target bacteria inhabit. Not only we can target specific bacteria in specific locations of the human body using this technology, but our platform can also be applied to bacteria that reside on animals, insects, plants, soil, water….
