Government agencies have a legal responsibility to capture ‘government records' on behalf of Archives. Email is a tool that has evolved as a protected and somewhat secure medium for corporate communications. However, Email are being replaced by Chat as a method of instant communication and collaboration. Chat has become ubiquitous, and it's use is growing by 40% since the beginning of COVID-19.Although Email is an official tool provided by Employers, including government, an offical enterprise chat platform has not been made available to employees, and so employees have adopted Social Media Chat platforms to fill the void. However, this presents a problem. Social Media Chat platforms are not "built for purpose" for the purpose of Government Archives with respect to capturing records and metadata in accordance with International Standards.Conversations regarding government decisions that were previously recorded on Email, are now being conducted on unofficial chat platforms, with no capability of recording these decisions on Archive and Preservation systems. These records and memories are being lost through failure to capture. When it comes to Chat Born-digital records on unofficial platforms, National Archives are being replaced by National Amnesia.VaultChat by Tabularium is an enterprise Chat and collaboration platform for Government, designed from an "Archives First" perspective, to enable Agencies and Archives to meet their legislative responsibilities.
