After examining current media, we realized the messages being shared didn't uphold those beliefs. They were messages of exclusion, messages of fear, and message of hate.We didn't like that. So we decided to do something about it.We all deserve to live in an environment where we feel accepted, not excluded. That is what motivated us to create the #TalkTolerance campaign. Join us and share how you talk tolerance.Extremist groups focus on recruiting isolated people who are in search of a sense of belonging. These isolated individuals are in need of messages of acceptance and tolerance that will decrease the appeal of extremist ideals. Our goal is to create a social media campaign that will motivate students ages 18 to 25 to spread these messages of tolerance to individuals susceptible to extremism. From our primary research, we have found that college students are generally accepting of these marginalized groups but ultimately do not actively promote this mentality of tolerance. Our campaign will ask students how they could promote tolerance, and then invite them to share their thoughts on social media. Our plan is to promote acceptance for the people of marginalized groups, thereby weakening the potency of the extremists' recruitment strategy. The students' message will be more powerful because it is not be based on fear, but rather tolerance and acceptance.
