Talking Infrastructure, a non-profit association, has been created by Dr Penny Burns, supported by Jeff Roorda, Ian Spangler, David Hope and Gregory Punshon, who form the initial board. All have a background in strategic asset management and planning and have a deep concern for our future. Our members are planners, strategic asset managers, financial specialists, environmental scientists, economists, sociologists, administrators and many others who share the realisation that to really benefit from the many changes that now surround us, all decisions need to reflect not the past but the futures that are now emerging. Infrastructure decision-making has always been challenging. It is now becoming much more so. Difficult challenges lie ahead as we transit from the 20th century world of large scale, centralised, infrastructure which provided mass services, to the 21st century world of small scale, de-centralised, ICT and communications-dominated infrastructure, providing individual and customised service. If you are an infrastructure decision-maker – and if you are in middle or senior management or an advisor, you almost certainly are – we invite you to join us in collaborative discussion, research and learning from emerging futures. Boards and politicians may get the media attention, but it is you, the decision-makers, who determine the infrastructure your communities get (and thus their future possibilities) by the information you seek out, the issues you take into account, the analyses you conduct – and also, by the power of communication of your ideas. The accountability may be theirs, but the responsibility is yours. Become a community member now. It is free and always will be. Take part in the discussion on our blog, subscribe to our podcasts (now in production), contribute your ideas. And if you should wish to take it further, later there will be an opportunity to become a full member and thus be able to vote and stand for the Board.
