Education Management - Cairo, Cairo Governorate, Egypt
Teachers First is a ground-breaking professional development programme that looks at improvements in behaviour and how teachers teach and interact with their students. A framework of teacher behaviours, constructed by the Open University provides the starting point for the framework used in Teachers First. Each teacher is entitled to 4 days of face to face intervention over 3 months and continuous support from a national team of mentors. Teachers work in communities of practice in their school and virtually through the Teachers First collaboration web site, which is available in Arabic and English. The system provides reports to show patterns of practice for both individuals and groups.Teachers First is a large-scale prototype to test what will work for all 1.7 million teachers across Egypt. The next phase will see how the processes work or need to be adapted for more teachers and explore what will and not work for every teacher beyond that. The program is being independently evaluated and this forms a feedback loop so that the program is developed and refined iteratively. A recent sample of 120 teachers showed that 87% felt that they had seen improvement in their Continuous Professional Development, teaching and assessment with no teacher reporting a negative effect. In one school a group of 15 students had returned to school following a previous decision to drop out.
