Design - Calgary, Alberta, Canada
The U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon competition challenges 20 international student-led teams to design, build, and operate the most attractive, affordable, and efficient solar-powered house. TRTL - Technological Residence, Traditional Living Team Canada's Solar Decathlon 2011 project addresses contemporary issues in First Nations housing. Through partnership with the Treaty 7 Nations of Southern Alberta, our design was guided by a traditional and holistic view of the home - as a living part of a greater natural order. Green building methods and culturally appropriate design contributed to the creation of a healthy, safe, durable, and affordable net-zero home. The result is TRTL - a technological residence that embraces traditional living. Team Canada The University of Calgary was the only Canadian entrant in the Solar Decathlon 2011. Our interdisciplinary team included students from environmental design, engineering, business and communications.
