TechStar's mission is to promote entrepreneurship and launch technology startups using the intellectual property originating from Metro Milwaukee research institutions. Between 2001 and 2006, TechStar facilitated the launch of 2 high tech and 13 biomedical companies during its operation. Exits include Prodesse ($87M w/milestones) and Nerites ($20M). Cytometix and PhysioGenix are TechStar companies. TechStar also created the Biomedical Technology Alliance (BTA), an organization formed to increase academic research capabilities and to catalyze the transition to a knowledge-based economy through collaboration in seven-county Southeastern Wisconsin region. The BTA's Collaborative Grant Program (CGP) distributed $1 million to teams of investigators who collaborate across Milwaukee research institutions and develop research applications with the potential to contribute to economic growth.
