Charleston native John Tecklenburg is a community leader with broad business and public service experience running for Mayor of Charleston in 2015. A commercial Realtor with Clement, Crawford and Thornhill since 2001, Tecklenburg served as the City of Charleston's business advocate as its Director of Economic Development from 1995 to 1999. In that position, he oversaw several city projects that promoted business development.Through the years, Tecklenburg has continued a family tradition as a hard-working small business owner and understands the important role of successful business in our community and about customer service. From 1978 to 1995, Tecklenburg was owner and president of Southern Oil Company, an independent distributor of petroleum products that grew to three locations and 40 employees before it was sold.A solid family man, Tecklenburg and his wife Sandy have raised their five children in Charleston and are a loving, faithful and fun family.Led by the example of his parents' community service and his own faith, Tecklenburg has shared his time and talent helping and leading many volunteer and community organizations. Not only has he served as president of the historic Rotary Club of Charleston and the Crisis Ministries homeless shelter, he is current chair of SC STRONG, a program for rehabilitation of former offenders. He also has been a leader with the Palmetto Project, Charleston County Human Service Commission, S.C. Coastal Conservation League and Low Country Aid to Africa.Tecklenburg is a product of public education during the days of desegregation and came to understand the need to bring diverse students together for a common cause. He holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Georgetown University, but also attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where his life-long passion for music and jazz flourished.
