Hospital & Health Care - Fukuoka, Fukuoka, Japan
Basically, the telemedicine activity started in 2002, when Korea-Japan co-hosted World Cup Soccer Games and these two countries were connected with a big optic fiber. "Genkai project" was organized by industry/government/educational groups in order to accelerate the mutual remote communications in various fields such as education, culture, and business, and Kyushu University Hospital joined as a medical team. With the supports from Core University Program of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Kyushu University Interdisciplinary Programs in Education and Projects in Research Development (P&P), our activity expanded to whole Asia under the name of "Asia-Kyushu Advanced Medical Network (AQUA)" organized in 2005.Essentially, the rapid and wide recognition of these activities, prompted Kyushu University Hospital to create a new office, Telemedicine Development Center of Asia (TEMDEC), in October 2008, which took over the role of AQUA, to lead international telemedicine operationalization. The purpose is to organize attractive and useful remote education programs with interactive discussion in Asia by taking full advantage of high-speed academic Internet, and advanced technologies. This facilitated routine and consistent sharing of new medical knowledge and advanced surgical procedures across the geographic borders.Interestingly, with the reliable and solid teamwork between medical staff and engineering people, TEMDEC is expanding these activities from Asia to the rest of the world. Furthermore, the application of the system to the real patient care is the next goal with the cooperation of International Medical Relations in our hospital.Conclusively ,with over 429 achievements till date;925 events(conferences, life demonstrations, workshops, teleeducation to remote medical students, doctors, telemedicine engineering trainings,); 622 connected instituitions (147 medical institutions) in 64nations; across the world,(http://www.temdec.med.kyushu-u.ac.jp/eng/our_partners.php) with over 371 collaborative activities and spread of network connectivities , from Asia to the Pacific North America, to Latin America to Europe and Africa through 371 research and education networks; TEMDEC is leading globalization of the hospital together with Oversea Exchange Center (OVEX) and International Patient Support Center (IPAC) with Telemedicine.
