The word tempura has a long and winding history.Today though, it's mostly known for it's use in the Japanese culinary arts, while one of the words far older meanings has otherwise been largely discarded. But if we look back, we see that both the food and the word first came to the Japanese through Portuguese merchants. The Portuguese version of the word itself can then be traced back even further to ancient Latin. And continuing throughout this history, these words have evolved with new meanings as well—from blending compounds and practicing restraint to tempering metals and seasoning food.Originally however—as the Latin tempus—the word meant time.
