Architecture Firm/Engineering Firm - N/A, , US
Our work is for and about people. Ten to One refers to long, ten to one odds where the spectacular is made from the everyday. We are driven by the belief that in large the built environment is not reflective of the endeavors of its occupants, and that design practice rarely successfully merges design with practice. Design should be strategically and sustainably planned. Buildings should produce their own energy. People should always have the opportunity for a little privacy, or a little adventure. Projects should be affordable. Designers should successfully build. Projects should do all of this. Since our inception in 2012 we have continuously moved towards our goal of working on more multi-faceted projects through professional flexibility and collaboration, even while maintaining a relatively small studio. Ten to One works in an ever widening range of scales and delivery methods, from design/build to partnering with multi-national teams of professionals, from mass produced furniture to urban design and infrastructure projects. We do this as a testing ground, as each project seeks to situate people within their wider context. Furniture projects are individual units which can form collectives. Loft projects have open spaces off of which each family member has a hide-out. Urban infrastructure projects create a new geothermal energy source from the sewer system, on which is piggybacked a bath house. We work in close collaboration with each of our Clients. We also work in close collaboration and formal association with numerous other designers, professionals, and contractors. We often expand the boundaries of conventional design practice and tailor delivery methods for each project. We build, we initiate, and we collaborate on many of our projects for a number of reasons; to best serve each scaled project; to achieve our designs; to achieve relatively low budgets; and to provide services for the underserved or not-thought-of-yet.
