Earth materials (bedrock and soil) affect all aspects of environmental and human health. They are the ultimate, natural sources of elements and compounds that can and do enter our air, food, and water. Earth materials contain real potential for harm in the form of naturally occurring toxic elements such as arsenic, lead, mercury, fluorine, cadmium, and radon — among a host of others. Although health hazards arising through exposure to these naturally occurring toxins are well known, the hazard potential of earth materials containing them is not.
