The 905er is a new online magazine and podcast for the GTHA region (except central Toronto) launching in the second quarter of 2020. It will have two primary concerns:1. Quality media and journalism for a 'media dead zone'.Urban Ontario is growing fast, and simultaneously the provincial vision for cities is changing. The ‘905' as a whole will have the most rapid growth in the province, ceasing to be characterized primarily by low density, high wealth suburban perspectives, and developing all the benefits, challenges and problems of large urban centres.Ontario's future is increasingly urban, but urban in a new way. Our cities will change fundamentally over the next 30 years, as will the way the people in those cities live their daily lives. The 905er aims to reflect, interpret and help shape that future; and to help put in place a positive and creative dialogue, and not one based on confrontation, lack of respect or small-mindedness.The 905er will demand the best solutions for the future of our region and reflect the importance of the 905 in Ontario - not simply as an afterthought to central Toronto.2. Democratic renewal:As Dave Meslin establihsed in his book "The Teardown", we are also facing a crisis in our faith in democracy.Democratic institutions at every level have failed to update their practices for the 21st century. To be involved in political activism anywhere in the western world is to be confronted by disillusionment and disappoitmentThe 905er will on a future shaped in collaboration with the people who call this region home. It must insist on better local democracy, innovative citizen roles in shaping our cities and a teardown of the barriers which have grown between citizens and decision-makers over a century of increasing government inertia. We need to literally turn our vision of democracy upside down and show that citizens stand at the top of the democratic pyramid, not the bottom.
