The Atlantic Foundation is a New Jersey nonprofit corporation created in 1963 by J. Seward Johnson, Sr. and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a private foundation exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It was established by Mr. Johnson to further his charitable interests and. Prior to his death in 1983 he transferred leadership to his son, J. Seward Johnson, Jr. The Atlantic Foundation makes grants to pre-selected organizations. It does not operate any direct, charitable programs, but may provide technical and administrative support to other related Johnson family private foundations. Funding from The Atlantic Foundation created Grounds For Sculpture, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, The Seward Johnson Atelier, and have sustained important scientific research, public art and charitable programs. Since 2014 grants made from the Pacific Fund have also advanced creative culture and addressed issues of the environment, social and economic justice in the United States and Costa Rica. The Atlantic Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals.
