The Brains with Beauty Project Details
The Brains with Beauty Project is a literacy and empowerment initiative that combats the stereotype that black women and girls are not as beautiful or intellectually capable as males and peers of other races. Through two parts – "The Salon Initiative," which places empowering books in hair salons, and "The One-Stop Initiative," an online platform that pairs literacy and beauty tips – we empower young black women and girls to see that we are both intelligent and beautiful. From study tips for the new SAT to discovering their true hair type, fashionistas, and scholars who visit www.brainswithbeauty.org and explore "The One-Stop Initiative" learn that excellence in both academics and beauty is not only possible but will render them unstoppable. Both branches of "The Brains with Beauty Project" pair brains (reading in salons and academic success advice online) with beauty (getting new hairstyles in salons and beauty tips online) to bolster the mantra: "we can have it all." Girls throughout the nation learn that they can have intelligence and beauty and even more importantly, that their intelligence is beautiful.
