Sports - Bristol, England, United Kingdom
In December 2020, The Bristol Gulls will be partaking in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challange a 3000 mile unsupported ocean rowing race from La Gomera all the way to Antigua. Our team's goal is to do to the crossing in the most sustainable way possible, raising awareness of pollution of our waters and drowning prevention, promoting a safe and healthy relationship with our waters, and supporting the RNLI Portishead and Clean Up Bristol Harbour. How?Our boat will be the 1st Ecoboat to take part in the race. Rannoch Adventure are building one of their standard boat: R45 using more sustainable composite materials with the aim to have less impact on the environment. For our kit, we are have currently partnered with a few UK based companies that are using alternative materials such as Econyl (100% regenerated nylon). We are also looking as much as we can into getting second hand items if not even renting opportunities.Another area we have also focused our attention to is the packaging especially regarding our food.- Most expedition foods come in single used pouches made out of foil/plastic in order to sustain boiling water. Unfortunately, it means that they are not recyclable creating a huge amount of waste. As we plan to eat our meals using our own containers we have found an alternative way to pack our food using a monolayer flexible plastic pouches making them 100% recyclable.- We are also currently exploring the avenue of working with a local or national chef in association with a nutritionist to develop our own local meals.
