The Budget Project is a team of justice-oriented developers, researchers, designers, artists, and organizers working to creatively illustrate racial and economic injustices in the Kansas City budget. We aim to bring public safety data to life by visualizing police and carceral spending in an honest and approachable way.Brought together last fall by racial justice organizing after the George Floyd uprisings, our project exists to challenge the dominant narrative by those in power. For decades, our "safety" has been conflated with funneling money into criminalization and incarceration, while draining resources from homes, education, and healthcare that give us life. Our mission is to:- Challenge dominant, established narratives around how community wealth is spent- Increase public and political imagination on public safety beyond policing- Push for an equitable distribution of city spending**WEBSITE COMING SOON**
