The Food Trade Game is a fun and exciting way of experiencing the realities of our global food market through role playing and simulation. Participants are randomly assigned to different actors in the industry such as large farmers, seed companies, or world demand. Through rounds of trading and economic transactions, each player tries to meet their objectives within the larger context of the market. This creates moments of frustration, excitement, and quick thinking on your feet---all opportunities for learning about how most of our food is grown and distributed in our globalized world.By simulating an agricultural market, participants have the chance to experience the challenges of modern day agriculture. This experiential learning is key to the process and is explored after the game through dialogue and exercises. At the end of the experience participants should be able to take away:-An understanding of modern agricultural markets and their driving forces-A basic understanding of industrial agriculture and free trade-An empathy for small-holder farmers and businesses that support them-A basic understanding of fair trade principles-Actions anyone can take to improve the outcomes of this system
