RGV REEF is located 12 miles north of the South Padre Island jetties and within state territorial waters, it covers 1650 acres. It is by far the largest Reef off the Texas coast and has the most material.Besides the nursery reef, it also contains increasing height patch reefs to carry multiple species through their life cycles. With 23,000 tons (46,000,000 lbs.) of material, primarily recycled concrete, RGV Reef is currently 3/4th completed and has been increasing Juvenile Red Snapper survival by an estimated 240,000 fish annually.We talk a lot about Red Snapper, because that is where the research is. All the Gulf fish evolved to do better living on or utilizing hard substrate reef. When you build it right for all the life staged of Red Snapper, it's built right for all the fish on the continental shelf.
