The Galileo School is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation that builds schools in war ravaged Northern Uganda. Our Ugandan program started in 2010 as an effort to provide top notch education to students who have experienced great suffering from Africa's longest running civil war. Although the region is now at peace, most of the schools in Northern Uganda were destroyed during the war. We help rebuild educational systems in communities that suffer from this lack of schools. Quality education is a key component in allowing children to reach their dreams, regardless of their past, and that education is a cornerstone for rebuilding communities. Our first school was constructed and opened in June 2011. The school is in a village called Bul Kur in the Gulu district of Northern Uganda which is about 25 miles directly east of Gulu and saw heavy rebel activity during Uganda's war against the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). The LRA committed many atrocities in the area where our school is located. However, our funding is now providing this community with a solid brick and cement foundation classroom building to educate almost 200 students. The students currently meet under trees and in a mud structure and many students cannot attend because they cannot afford the fees of a few dollars a year. The Galileo School will be a Primary 1 to Primary 5 school welcoming everyone in the community to attend. This is the first of many planned projects in this area.
