As the town's only locally owned and operated news organization, The Garner Citizen covers government affairs, education, faith, business and sports for the Garner, N.C. community. Our print edition made its debut July 24, 2007, and our current website has been live since April 2009. The newspaper is published each Tuesday, and the website is updated regularly. In addition to garnercitizen.com, we're online at Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Tumblr and our blog. We're a newer paper with a small staff, but have already received positive attention for our work. Our investigative piece about a roadway preacher and online breaking news coverage of the ConAgra explosion nabbed first-place wins in the N.C. Press Association's 2009 editorial competition. We've also received recognition from various news sources, including the News & Observer and N.C. Transparency, for our coverage of local news and issues.Locally, we've been out front on a number of stories that other news outlets picked up only later. We were first to report Southeast Regional Library's possible closing, the missing fire department funds, and the controversy over the town's trash contract. Our commitment to Garner extends beyond our newsgathering operation. In 2009 we sponsored a public debate of Garner Town Council candidates, and created a blog about the election with information about the candidates, links to other news articles, and real-time coverage of the election results. Our philanthropic division supports community causes such as Relay for Life and Jump for Hunger. Our office is located in Garner at 1401 Aversboro Road, Suite 104. We are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
