In the 1930s Franklin Delano Roosevelt managed to strike a coalition of progressives, liberals and socialists to pass a series of reforms and programs that together encompassed the New Deal, which lifted the United States out of the Great Depression, empowered the working class and strengthened America's liberal democracy. Even before the COVID-19 global pandemic came to be, the world was facing multiple crises, many of them similar to that of the 1930s. Right wing populism on the rise, exacerbating economic inequality, liberal democracy losing ground to authoritarianism. In addition to this, the climate and ecological crises pose the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. Today, COVID-19 gives us a unique opportunity to reshape the world the way we want it. For that we need a Global Green New Deal. We need to transform everything, from the way we move to what we eat, from what we learn in school to the way our economy and government operates. We need to bridge the work of grassroots activists and political leaders; of conservationists and farmers, of labour unions and businesses, of scientists and faith leaders. We need everyone, everywhere doing everything, only a broad, diverse coalition with a unifying goal can stand the test of our time. We need a Global Green New Deal. The Global Green New Deal is a manifesto being built to unite the environmental justice movement and provide a set of demands and principles that if followed by leaders everywhere in the world could defeat the climate emergency while lifting the wellbeing of billions of people in the process. Drafted primarily by young people with the support of policy experts and scientists, the Green New Deal is the roadmap for the future we want for generations to come. A future where people and nature live in harmony, a future where everyone is free and equal, a future that we will build together.If we work together for a Global Green New Deal, there's nothing we can't achieve.
