The Great Northern celebrates winter in Minneapolis and Saint Paul by providing a distinctive platform from which to share the spirit of The North with the world. We bring together legacy festivals and produce original programming, all highlighting Minnesota at its seasonal best. Each year, The Great Northern galvanizes the Twin Cities, drawing 375,000 visitors and sparking national attention. Led by Executive and Artistic Director Kate Nordstrum, The Great Northern includes outdoor activations, world premiere concerts and performances, food events, site specific art, panels and speakers, films, regional craft, commissioned writing, storytelling, and partnerships with local and national institutions.While The Great Northern invokes joy and celebration, it also highlights an existential threat to winter: climate change. There is no place on earth unaffected by warming weather, and our own region has seen some of its beloved traditions diminished and its environment compromised. In celebrating winter, The Great Northern is also a call to action. To that end, we will expand the 2021 festival's impact by presenting a broader range of programming focused on climate change, the richness of our winter arts scene, and diverse perspectives on how we, as a community, embrace winter.
