The Heritage Council was established as a statutory body under the Heritage Act, 1995. It takes an integrated approach to heritage, with responsibilities that include both its cultural and natural aspects. The Heritage Act provides a definition of ‘heritage' - and its breadth is truly comprehensive. Charity Reg no: 20036867It includes monuments, archaeological objects, art and industrial works, documents and genealogical records, architectural heritage, flora, fauna, wildlife habitats, landscapes, seascapes, wrecks, geology, heritage gardens, parks and inland waterways. The mission of the Heritage Council is governed by the Heritage Act 1995 which requires the Council to propose policies and priorities for the identification, protection, preservation and enhancement of the national heritage.The Heritage Council is charged with:*Promoting interest, education, knowledge, prideand care of our national heritage and supportingappreciation and enjoyment of our heritage*Co-operating with public authorities, educationbodies and others in the promotion of its functions*Advancing the co-ordination of all activities related tothe functions of the CouncilThe Heritage Council aims to ensure that our heritage is managed and conserved to enrich the lives of people now and for the future.
