The Hit and Run Project supports families and survivors of hit-and-run incidents nationwide while increasing community awareness.We were founded after the tragic death of 19-year-old Matthew Stevens, who as a pedestrian was the victim of a hit and run on September 12, 2015, in Neosho, Missouri. The individual who hit Matthew fled the scene, and could only be charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident because it could not be proven that another crime (DUI/DWI, reckless driving, etc.) was being committed at the time of the incident. In most states, Leaving the Scene of an Accident has a statute of limitations and is punishable by only a few years or even months in prison and a small fine. The Hit and Run Project offers grief support and advocacy, champions vulnerable road user safety, and educates communities about the deficiencies of state hit-and-run laws.
