Mission: The Human Rights Defenders Project promotes and protects human rights in Guatemala by standing in solidarity with the courageous men and women who defend those rights. We seek to serve and support human rights defenders through advocacy and accompaniment, raising awareness about their efforts and struggles, denouncing the threats and attacks against them, mobilizing international solidarity to safeguard them, offering emergency assistance in their times of need, and facilitating access to national and international mechanisms of protection. Actions: • Accompaniment – Support defenders by attending critical meetings, public forums, court cases, organizational activities and other events. Stand with defenders in their moments of need: when they are discouraged, sick, hospitalized or imprisoned. • Advocacy – Facilitate meetings between defenders and the diplomatic corps, IACHR and U.N. Special Rapporteurs, etc. Work in coordination and coalition with national and international human rights organizations to advocate for the protection of defenders and the promotion of human rights. • Communication – Create content that raises awareness about human rights defenders, their work and their struggles. • Urgent Actions – Denounce threats and attacks against defenders to an international audience; coordinate actions of effective solidarity to assist defenders at risk. • Delegations – Plan and lead international educational delegations of students and/or activists to visit with defenders, their communities and organizations. Provide analysis for individuals and groups visiting Guatemala. • Karen Brandow Fund - Provide emergency financial assistance for human rights defenders to help cover urgent needs such as: food, transportation, lodging, legal fees, medical aid, family support, etc. • Defenders Council – Receive guidance from an advisory group of Guatemalan human rights defenders to evaluate our past actions and plan our future efforts.
