The Humanities Council SC funds, promotes, counsels and coordinates all manner of thoughtful (and thought-provoking) endeavors: exhibits, documentaries, discussion forums, research, planning, workshops, dramatizations, lectures - and on and on - that pertain to the humanities. And what are the humanities? They are history, literature, languages, linguistics, philosophy, ethics, comparative religion and anthropology, as well as historical, critical and theoretical approaches to the arts. They are how we understand ourselves and our world. They're also how we communicate that understanding to others. The groups and individuals whose projects we embrace arrive at our doorstep from every conceivable point of origin. They are rural and urban, young and old, scholars and students of all colors, creeds and backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common. They're thinkers. And they're the kind of thinkers who want to do something with their thoughts ... something of practical value ... something that makes a difference. The projects themselves are every bit as diverse as their creators and maybe more so. They reflect the entire spectrum of human experience: the orderly and chaotic, the sublime and ridiculous, the lofty and lowly and everything in between that makes us what we are.PurposeThe Humanities CouncilSC seeks to increase public understanding of and support for the humanities; telling the human story by awarding grants for high-quality public programs, by generating special humanities initiatives, and by bringing humanities perspectives to bear on contemporary issues. The Humanities CouncilSC Programs and Initiatives are balanced, reflecting sensitivity to the diversity of ideas, encourage open dialogue, demonstrate integrity and are ethical in operations.MissionTo enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians.
