"I will be a Hummingbird. I will do the best I can!" - Nobel Laureate Wangari MaathaiChange doesn't have to be expensive. That's why The Hummingbird Project is committed to providing big impact on a small budget. Our goal is to empower communities to create healthy and abundant livelihoods through environmentally regenerative technologies. Specifically, we work to ensure that communities (particularly those adversely affected by industrialized farming practices) have the tools they need to grow healthy food, cultivate a living soil, and capture renewable energy. 2015 Top-Rated NonProfit on GreatNonProfits.orgGuideStar Exchange Gold ParticipantOngoing Projects:Living Soil Saves Lives: Since 2012, THP has trained over 2,500 Indian farmers on how to cultivate a living soil & transition to organic agriculture. We have given presentations to farmers, trainers, & government officials in 6 different states across India, and provided the supplies and training necessary to establish 3 soil microbiology labs (2 in India and 1 in Thailand).Sustainable Schools Initiative: We partner with the Daraja Academy in Kenya and use permaculture principles to help the school become a working model for sustainability. In March 2014, for example, we installed a 5,000 liter biogas digester capable of producing 2-3 cubic meters of biogas/day. Plans are underway to develop a curriculum to help educate neighboring communities about the importance of environmental stewardship & implementation of renewable energy systems.Cleveland Seed Bank: CSB works to inspire, educate, & grow a community network of seed savers dedicated to the creation of a locally adapted seed supply. It also acts as an independent & accessible source of open-pollinated, non-GMO seeds. To this end, we have The Seed Library at the Cleveland Public Library, as well as an online seed exchange where local growers can upload offers to share, sell, or swap seeds on their own terms.
