Founded in 2008, the Kroo Bay Initiative funded programs in education, microcredit, and women's vocational training in Kroo Bay, a community outside Freetown, Sierra Leone. A 501(c)3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization, it closed in 2014 when the board of directors voted to move all assets and institutional groups under the umbrella of the University of North Texas Foundation. The group continues today as a chapter at UNT called Engaged Beyond Borders.
