PurposeThe educational and enrichment opportunities taken for granted in communities across the country are dangerously lacking for teen girls on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The Lakota Cultural Exchange is an earnest attempt to offer one girl at a time the chance to participate in the empowering Girls Rock! Chicago camp. This camp and the volunteers who tirelessly work it are entirely devoted to helping teen girls find their voice. One hundred percent of any donation to the exchange program will go directly toward the transportation, camp and hosting expenses of a Lakota girl for one week in Chicago. For summer 2015, thanks to an incredibly generous donation from an anonymous philanthropist who covered all flight and camp expenses for a girl coming from Pine Ridge to Chicago, my focus was on building on the previous summer's extended pilot by tweaking the exchange experience, particularly in enhancing the guest one through host support for basics like transportation to and from O'Hare for pick-up and drop-off. The plan for summer 2016, with the exchange here on a one-year hiatus, is to take the camp directly to the girls in South Dakota for a weekend modeled on the women's camp run by Girls Rock! Chicago. To cover instrument purchase, I'm revisiting my original fundraising effort, and to facilitate some instrument donation, I'm currently working to partner with a Chicago-based NFP focused on Pine Ridge.
