At age 17, Houda al-Habash founded her Koran summer school for women in the secular military state of Syria, and for the past 28 years has taught thousands of students. THE LIGHT IN HER EYES follows one summer at Houda's school, presenting a textured and intimate portrait of her character and the vibrant community she leads. Houda challenges traditions of Arab society by using Islamic education to advocate for women and girls. Immersed in the women's side of the mosque, the film depicts spaces rarely seen, portraying the crucial role women are playing in the Islamic revival.
