The Loewy Institute, established on April 29, 2016 by Lehigh University Professor Wojciech Misiolek with the support of The Loewy Family Foundation, continues the cutting-edge research of Lehigh's Institute for Metal Forming (IMF, founded in 1970) within the context of global research collaboration. Assistance from the Loewy Family Foundation has helped establish a Loewy Institute Visiting Professor position, enabling Lehigh graduate and undergraduate students as well as faculty to collaborate with professors and students from all over the world; research has been conducted alongside colleagues from Australia, Austria, Brazil, Colombia, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, Poland and more. The Loewy Family Foundation, established in 1966, honors the legacy of Erwin and Ludwig Loewy--two brothers who fled Nazi Germany just prior to World War II and revolutionized the manufacturing of large metal parts in the U.S. and England. Specifically, the brothers' work made hugely significant advances regarding aviation manufacturing, creating massive forging and extrusion presses which greatly changed the production of fighter planes, the commercial airline industry aircraft, and even assisted with breaking the sound barrier. Current research performed by The Loewy Institute carries on the passion for manufacturing improvements that Erwin and Ludwig Loewy exhibited, with students and visiting professors working on research projects such as deformation processes, powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing, materials characterization, and physical and numerical modeling. Alongside international collaborations, The Loewy Institute also performs cross-disciplinary research with other departments at Lehigh University.
