The Long Run Institute directly applies current research, writing and scholarship in business, political economy and economic history to informing contemporary policy and corporate strategic challenges. The fact is that since at least the Industrial Revolution, our collective economic, social and policymaking experience in confronting transformations in technology, trade, innovation and growth has created a vast pool of untapped knowledge. The focus of The Long Run Institute is on mining that untapped knowledge and putting the relevant parts of it to work in addressing today's challenges. This is how the past can be useful to the present and the future. The Long Run Institute is led by its co-founders and directors: Dr. John Turner (UK), Dr. Laurence B. Mussio (Canada) and Dr. Michael Aldous (UK). Their combined experience and insights led them to identify the need for The Institute; namely, to address the conspicuous gap in the relationship between academic/scholarly knowledge and production in business and economic history on the one hand, and contemporary corporate strategy and public policymaking on the other. The Long Run Institute provides a way to enrich knowledge and information flows to decision makers in a more systematic way. The overarching purpose of LRI is to put the practical insights of the long-run experience to work for the greater good. The Long Run Institute is founded on three essential elements:The practical value of scholarship in business and economic history to policymakers and executives; The advantage of intense, focused discussions for facilitating connections (literal and metaphoric), networks and practical ways of moving forward; andThe necessity of being independent and international in scope to best serve the networks across government and enterprise in the North Atlantic world and beyond.
