Consumer Goods - Lawrence, Massachusetts, United States
The Maker Innovation Lab Lawrence (The MILL) will reinforce both the historical, and the present day impact manufacturing and innovation is having on our city. The time is ripe for a makers-space / innovation hub in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Known as one of the original "maker" cities in the United States focused on textile manufacturing, over the past five years custom manufacturing businesses have been attracted to the historic mills. New cross-sector collaborations between educational partners and economic development are all creating an ideal environment of momentum and resources to foster a new maker/innovation hub. Studies continue to highlight that the baby-boomer generation will be exiting the workforce at an increasing rate, leaving a shortage of employees in skilled manufacturing and trades. Maker-spaces introduce communities to the creative expression of making. The hands-on experience, along with guided mentorship, advances opportunity for an educated and enthusiastic workforce to fill gaps, and fosters entrepreneurial endeavors in industries of technology, energy expansion and manufacturing. As a collaborative maker-space, The Maker Innovation Lab Lawrence will work to engender an atmosphere of innovation and invention – with a focus on user 18+ and an even greater focus on the female innovators. User-generated programs will seek out societal challenges that may have technological solutions. The MILL will provide innovative entrepreneurs with the ability to develop the next generation of manufacturing businesses in a collaborative environment that provides access to the equipment, tools, materials and business know-how they might otherwise not have access to - encouraging the overall economic development of our city, and the surrounding communities within the Merrimack Valley.
