The Merton Institute for Contemplative Living's mission is to awaken interest in and deepen the understanding of contemplative living through the works of Thomas Merton and other spiritual masters. Contemplative Living is living in true relationship with oneself, God, others and nature, free of the illusion of separateness. Every person has a contemplative nature that needs to be nourished in order for us to realize our full human potential, to experience our interconnectedness, and to contribute to improving the human condition. Our everyday life is our spiritual life. Contemplative living is a fundamental means of integrating the sacred and secular dimensions of life. Our contemplative formation needs to take place in the context of community. It leads more meaningful relationships with self, others, God and nature and deeper sense of purpose and meaning in life. Thomas Merton's approach to contemplative living is born of the deep monastic contemplative tradition. Merton's genius was his ability to bridge the sacred, spiritual orientation to everyday secular life. The Merton Institute for Contemplative Living's fundamental purpose is to transform individuals and society's consciousness regarding complex issues confronting us today. Through programs, retreats, and online resources, the Institute has a thriving local, regional, and global contemplative community.
