The Mudita Foundation, a registered section 21 company, has for the past three years been servicing school-going children aged 14-19 who are most at risk of developing substance abuse disorders. Headed up by an Educational Psychologist, the main objective has been to keep at-risk children within the school system for as long as possible and to treat any substance use disorders on an outpatient basis at a local school premises. We only use researched best practice to achieve our goals and therefore make use of the widely recognised Matrix Model®. Our main focus Whilst our clients undergo intensive outpatient treatment 3-5 times a week for a minimum of 16 weeks we also go the extra mile in ensuring that they are coping at school. We realize that treating substance use disorders and other clinical disorders in isolation can bring about limited success. We have thus tailored a programme to address the scholastic needs of the child in order to bring about an increase in general functioning. This is not only important for the grade 8-11 learners but also for the Matric learners we service. Every year we treat approximately 15 to 20 Matric learners and we are faced with not only the substance abuse problem but scholastic problems as well. Through the 16 week programme and many, many hours spent on 'scholastic training', we are starting to achieve great results (a formal report outlining this success will follow in 2014).
