The Nashville Mobile Market is a non-profit social enterprise venture that aims to increase access to healthy foods in the South, East, and North Nashville communities. These communities have been identified as food deserts, given a prevalence of fast food restaurants, liquor stores, and convenience stores but a lack of supermarkets and corner stores that provide healthy, fresh grocery options. Through a mobile vending business structure, the communities will be provided access to fresh produce, lean meats, dairy, and non-perishable staple items. Studies have shown that creating access to affordable healthy foods in communities similar to Nashville's food deserts have led to a decrease in prevalence of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic diet-related diseases. This project's social enterprise structure means it therefore requires only the initial capital investment for the development of the project, after which the business will be self-sustaining and profitable. A $65,000 seed funding grant from the Frist Foundation has provided the capital for launching the business and covering the inventory and operational costs for the first three months in full operation. After the launch phase, the program will be sustainable, and profits will be re-invested into the communities to promote food security and provide health care for those in need.
