The National Prevention of Blindness Committee (NPBC) was established following a Royal Decree which stated that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia should join the global initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), "VISION 2020: The Right to Sight", for elimination of major causes of avoidable blindness by the year 2020. The main aim of the committee is to reduce incidents of preventable blindness and visual impairment.Objectives of NPBC:- Support existing programs and activities.- Create, develop and establish new programs to combat the causes of Visual Impairment (VI).- Provide support to professionals, centers and researchers who are involved in the fight against VI.- Create database for eye care and VI resources, in Saudi Arabia.Roles and Responsibilities of the committee:- Collaborate with Ministry of Health (MoH), through the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) department, in planning and executing eye care programs.- Facilitate the collaboration between MOH and IAPB and other NGOs in the field of prevention of blindness (PB). - Supervise and encourage the celebration of World Sight Day (WSD).- Represent SA in PB activities nationally and internationally.
