The relevance of utopian thinking. How do we stimulate progress to be able to build a smarter and healthier city? What we can observe in our current time is the development of existing products in an existing society towards more sustainable products and a more sustainable society. Our knowledge grows and feeds on present knowledge. This is a logical, and very useful process that helps cities adapt to new realities and develop towards a "smarter city". But there is another way of treating this issue. By forgetting, and thinking of a utopia we clear our minds of the existing and are not bothered by reality. This helps us to dream. When we dream, we are free, when we are free we have the best ideas. If we can put our minds together and work on a new dream city, a natural city, we can create a spot on the horizon, a common goal and a destination. We will never get there, mostly because this spot on the horizon will change whenever we get new insights. This is why we can create a dynamic utopia that changes in time. So the relevance of utopian thinking is that this enables us to vision a dream city to motivate us. With this utopia in mind we can think out of the box and create new ideas about all that matters for a smart city, a natural city. So how do we use all the knowledge we have for new concepts about the city? Are the choices we have made naturally the right ones? We build our utopia. This utopia will then help us to be critical about our way of life and the way we build our cities. A thinktank can than develop ideas to transform our cities to natural cities where man and nature co-exist in harmony.
