Music - Vasai, Maharashtra, India
When Reuben D'silva set up the R&B Academy of Music, Vasai's only enterprise that provides training for multiple instruments under one roof, he knew that the project needed to offer more. With the desire to use music as a strong catalyst of social change, he established the academy's development wing and named it The Ohana Foundation. Numerous studies have showcased the positive impact that music has on the cognitive development of children, however, most children from low socio – economic backgrounds never even get an opportunity to touch a musical instrument. This is the exact situation this initiative intended to change; the word Ohana means ‘family' and with the foundation he aimed to build a family of volunteers who introduce music to the underprivileged and assist them in channelizing their emotions using sound and skill. What started out as a one-day workshop at the ‘Handmaids of the Blessed Trinity Orphanage', grew into a concrete association where every Sunday a group of enthusiastic volunteers come together and train 60 children (all girls) in learning the nuances of playing the guitar, keyboard, and cajon. While TOF is still in its infant stage, the road ahead bright and promising. Take a look at a few the foundations immediate objectives:- Develop a larger volunteer workforce- Build alliances with (add a number here) more orphanages / schools - Create a teaching module which can be replicated in orphanages / schools across the country Since volunteering is the backbone of the foundation activities, please join our team and help us take this cause a step further.
