Museums & Institutions - Oriental, North Carolina, United States
The Old Baldy Foundation is a 501c3 organization dedicated to the historic preservation and maintenance of NC oldest lighthouse, Old Baldy, and interpreting its history in a museum and educational outreach. The Old Baldy Lighthouse is located on Bald Head Island, NC, a barrier island that sits at the mouth of Cape Fear River. The lighthouse has witnessed over 200 years of history on the river, but the island tells an even longer story. From pirates, to soldiers, to life-savers and light keepers, a diverse lot of characters once called Bald Head Island home. On Bald Head, North Carolina's first lighthouse stood sentinel, enslaved people first experienced freedom, and the state's environmental movement coalesced. The Old Baldy Foundation celebrates Bald Head Island's heritage by preserving Old Baldy Lighthouse as a museum interpreting the Lower Cape Fear's rich maritime history. The Old Baldy Lighthouse is open as a historic site for visitors. Guests can step back in history by climbing to the top of the lighthouse and viewing 360-degree panoramic views of the island, walking the Old Baldy grounds, which was once home to different lighthouse keepers, and by viewing our museum. Visit our website for an in-depth look at our visitor experiences and begin learning of the rich maritime history on Bald Head Island.
