BACKGROUND of the ENSEMBLE The ensemble first came together for a 2006-7 collaboration on the multidisciplinary theater work, Pagbabalik (Return), which followed a young Filipino-American woman to her homeland, where she documented her family members' stories – in the process, encountering spirits of her ancestors. The piece merged tradition and innovation to examine the meanings of home and return, fusing spoken word-theatre, dance, indigenous and contemporary music and explores themes of immigration, Filipino American identity, home, history, and language. It drew from Filipino mythology and traditions towards the prevailing theme of "return" in its various meanings. Originally a one-woman-show, the work expanded into a full theatrical production with a cast of actors, dancers, and musicians who contributed to choreography, musical composition and direction. With the support of the Zellerbach Family Foundation, Pagbabalik (Return) was successfully performed in 2006 as a Work-in-Progress to full houses at Bay Area Festivals, including CounterPULSE's Emerging Performance Festival, then as an evening work-in-progress at La Peña Cultural Center and in 2007 at Bindlestiff Studios; it was presented at La Peña Cultural Center in 2007 as a completed work.
