Think Tanks - Little Rock, Arkansas, United States
The last decade in American and European politics has been one of tumult: economic, social, and cultural. To acknowledge this is not to say anything new, and yet the political and policy responses to this reality have frequently fallen short of providing the kinds of answers we need to build a fairer, more prosperous, and better integrated world in the 21st century. Heartland areas—from America to Britain and across the West—have real grievances about the way the modern economy has left them behind. But the politics of nativism and isolationism don't offer the right answers to these challenges. We have to forge a future that's open, prosperous, and politically sustainable. That means drawing these places more directly into global flows of people, ideas, and capital. And it means combatting the politics of cultural and national protectionism that fuel extremism, violence, and democratic dysfunction. This is the work we are setting about: putting forward ideas for an open, prosperous global future and developing a richer understanding of the economic and social dynamics in the areas that have been left behind. We want to help envision a fairer global economy, to combat nativist politics and disinformation that undermine liberal democracy, and to center our work in the very places we are seeking to revitalize and understand. Those places include the American South, Rust Belt, Plains, and Midwest—and beyond to regions like the North of England, post-industrial France, and former East Germany. We're beginning here in America, born in Arkansas and committed to building out our reach as we grow. We hope that you'll join us, either through financial support or engagement with our planned programs of study and outreach, to help shape a new global century that reaches more places and leaves fewer people behind.
