Historically, the creative work of women has been underrepresented and under-appreciated across the board. Often times women couldn't even be credited for their artistic work as that was thought to be unacceptable. Have you ever read a book or seen a painting from an earlier time in history that was attributed to "Anonymous?" Well, in the words of Virginia Woolf, "For most of history, Anonymous was a woman."Here at The Rational Creature, we are working against this long, biased history to create work that represents and promotes the fight for feminist issues (including the struggles of past and present), celebrates the spirits of women, and strives toward overall gender equality. In The Feminine Mystique, Betty Friedan wrote, "The only way for a woman … to find herself, to know herself as a person, is by creative work of her own." That is exactly what is at the heart of our publication. We feature a vast array of creative work, including written pieces, photography, videos, audio tracks, and more. Our multimedia style allows us to show multiple dimensions of numerous situations and issues. Content launches once a semester at an annual, on-campus event open to students, faculty, and alumni. Started in December 2016 with funding from New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study's Student Resource Fund, we hope to reflect the diversity, the hearts, and the creative nature of feminists across our campus, and perhaps even across the globe.
