The Santa Maddalena Foundation for Writers and Botanists was established to honor the great novelist and memoirist Gregor von Rezzori. Its aim is to offer a retreat to writers and botanists that provides freedom and tranquility for work.There are four resident Fellowships available during each season of the year. Fellows are invited to stay in the Santa Maddalena Writers' Retreat in Donnini near Florence, a house that has fostered the talents of Bruce Chatwin and Zadie Smith amongst others.Associated with the Foundation is the Festival degli Scrittori, Città di Firenze, an annual writers' festival whose main prize, the Premio Gregor von Rezzori, rewards the best foreign work translated into Italian each year.
