Hospital/Clinic - N/A, N/A, N/A
The Shuchart Foundation for Mental Health Awareness is on a mission to combat the stigma associated with mental illness by encouraging those afflicted with a disorder to speak openly about it. The company's founder, John Shuchart, was a victim of verbal and emotional abuse by his parents and has battled depression for years. Despite the concerns of his contemporaries ('what will people think?'), the successful entrepreneur recently decided to speak openly about his condition and, in fact, draw attention to it as a way to help others. His book, "You are not the brightest of my four sons" represents The Shuchart Group's first step in its mission to help end the stigma. The organization also plans to provide workshops on depression and the stigma associated with mental illness, and John will be speaking to groups at events across the country to end the stigma once and for all. "I have to lead by example," Shuchart says. "By writing this book, by creating the workshop, by speaking to groups, I'm standing out front, saying to everyone and anyone who will listen, ‘I have a mental illness. I have owned six businesses. I wrote a book. I have great friends and family. I'm okay!'" "And you can be too!" Through Linked In, The Shuchart Group intends to expand the dialogue about mental illness and build an on-line community of support, encouragement and resources.
