The Smiling Coast Women Empowerment Network (SCWEN) was founded by a group of Gambian-American Muslim women in the Summer of 2014. Our desire to start this initiative is rooted in our personal stories having all faced numerous adversities growing up in the inner-city as Gambian-American Muslim women. Given these experiences, we were inspired to help young women in our community grow into empowered, college-bound scholars who can realize their talents and ambitions with the support of other women throughout their journey. As The Smiling Coast Women Empowerment Network we aim to provide guidance & support for young women as they strive for empowerment, higher education, and embracing a Muslim-West-African-American identity.Founding Members: Kujegi Camara, Fatima Janneh, Isatou Simaga, Fatuma Hydara, Fatoumata Waggeh, Hatou Camara, Aminata Touray
