Civic & Social Organization - Toronto, Ontario, Canada
The South Asian Yard is incorporated not-for-profit organization. X University's Social Work student Ria Arora created The South Asian Yard for second-generation South Asian Canadians like herself to spark a dialogue about the bicultural experience.Ria is an Indian-Canadian woman born to immigrant parents. As a young woman, she's experienced the identity crossroads of being a Brown woman in a White society. Not knowing her mother tongue and resisting her parents' attempts at preserving her cultural roots by restricting her social freedoms, mobility, and privileges, she's deemed as the "rebellious" child and "coconut" (Brown on the outside, White on the inside). As a result, she's never truly felt accepted, let alone connected to her community.A repercussion of being the rebellious child is the ostracism from the Indian and Canadian community and the disconnection and confusion with navigating her identity. Ria faced challenges in meeting like-minded people who share similar experiences, leaving her further isolated and alienated. Knowing she's not alone, she's created this space for people with similar experiences to explore their identities without the pressure to label, choose one identity over the other, and defend and justify their choices behind their identity.
