Museums & Institutions - Trappe, Pennsylvania, United States
Our organization is dedicated to bringing the legacy and home of Frederick Muhlenberg back to life. Born in Trappe, Pennsylvania, in 1750, Muhlenberg is best known as the first Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. He was also the first signer of the Bill of Rights and a member of the Continental Congress. Muhlenberg was Speaker of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and also a pivotal figure in local history, serving as the first president judge, recorder of deeds, and register of wills when Montgomery County was established in 1784. For several years, his home in Trappe was a de facto center of government. In the early 2000s, his house was almost demolished, but a grassroots effort by local citizens saved The Speaker's House and property. Join us as we work to preserve Muhlenberg's story and his beloved home.
