The Umoya Project is based at the Missionaries of Charity home in Khayelitsha. This home houses multiple physically and mentally differently-abled, elderly, sick and abandoned men and women. As this home never turns away anyone that needs a place to stay, the numbers are always in flux. Many men and women find themselves living in this home for large periods of time, while others never leave. The Sisters that run the home do tremendous work in serving those most vulnerable, however due to the large need they struggle to make ends meet. This is where we come in. Our project assists the home by organising donations, volunteers and vital resources needed by the home. Our volunteerism project gathers volunteers to spend face-to-face time with those living in the home, running interactive activities that get residents moving, creating and living! Our team also contributes towards any fixing or upgrading of the physical property and garden that is needed throughout each year. Due to the fact that residents arrive with no personal effects, our office also seeks donations of clothing, medical supplies, toiletries, books, stationary, paper, arts & craft materials and blankets. We have also built a vegetable garden to assist the home in growing their own food, and therefore always seek additional gardening tools and seeds.
